A praia de Copacabana localiza-se no bairro de mesmo nome, na zona Sul da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, no Brasil.

Considerada a praia mais famosa do mundo, e carinhosamente apelidada pela população de Princesinha do Mar, em função da canção, a sua história é um misto de tradição, glamour e glória.

Limitada pela avenida Atlântica, as suas areias são sede de grandiosos eventos como campeonatos mundiais de futebol de areia , campeonatos mundiais de vôlei, palco de shows que reuniram até 1 milhão de pessoas (como o dos Rolling Stones e a gravação do DVD Claudia Leitte Ao Vivo Em Copacabana da cantora Claudia Leitte em 2008) e do maior réveillon do planeta com mais de 3 milhões de pessoas.

O desenho em curvas de seu calçadão (padrão Mar largo) é conhecido no mundo todo e foi inspirado no calçadão de Lisboa e usado por Burle Max na praia.

Na década de 1970, foi realizado pela SURSAN, através de dragas nacionais e holandesas, um grande aterro hidráulico, comandado pelo engenheiro Hildebrando de Góes Filho, presidente da CBD – Cia. Brasileira de Dragagens, que ampliou a área de areia da praia e cujos objetivos principais eram: o alargamento das pistas da avenida Atlântica, a passagem do interceptor oceânico, tubulação que transporta todo o esgoto da zona Sul até o emissário de Ipanema e, ainda, evitar que as ressacas chegassem até a avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana e invadissem as garagens dos edifícios da avenida Atlântica. Mais tarde, foi construída na orla uma ciclovia e alguns quiosques para atendimento ao público, os quais atualmente estão sendo remodelados em parceria com a iniciativa privada.

Os estudos em modelos físicos hidráulicos desta ampliação foram realizados no LNEC, em Lisboa. Neste modelo, em Lisboa, trabalharam os engenheiros portugueses Fernando Maria Manzanares Abecasis, Veiga da Cunha, Antonio Pires Castanho e Daniel Vera-Cruz e o engenheiro brasileiro Jorge Paes Rios.

A praia foi utilizada como sede de alguns eventos nos Jogos Pan-americanos de 2007. Nas datas comemorativas, tais como dias Santo e outras, costuma receber diversos eventos, como apresentações musicais, teatro e manifestações de ordem política, humanitária e religiosa.
